Abstract

A methodology is proposed for identifying latent connections in distributed technological processes, which are formalized as neighborhood systems — directed graphs with node-variables. The primary tool employed here is RA-series, designed to capture anomalous oscillations of variables that occur during critical operating modes of the system. Such events carry unique information about hidden interactions that remain invisible under normal conditions. The basic RA algorithm implements the search for latent connections by identifying statistically significant time delays between oscillations in different nodes, which includes series normalization, oscillation detection, and significance assessment of connections using permutation tests. The extended method additionally accounts for nonlinear dependencies and multifunctional influences, applying regression models, including those with threshold effects and multifactor connections, while the significance of coefficients is verified using t-statistics and permutation tests. The effectiveness of the approaches has been demonstrated on a 10-node sugar production model: the basic algorithm revealed connections based on time delays, while the extended method uncovered nonlinear effects, including the influence of oscillation amplitude on delay, threshold switching, and the combined impact of multiple nodes. The developed methodology provides a comprehensive toolkit for identifying hidden interrelationships in complex systems, particularly in cases where traditional methods prove ineffective due to low data informativeness in nominal modes, thereby opening new opportunities for diagnostics and optimization of industrial processes.
