A EXPERIÊNCIA DO LUGAR
Abstract
This article aims to understand the concept of place through the articulation between interdisciplinary theoretical references and lived experiences in the territory of São Lourenço-MG, considering place as a relational, sensitive, and embodied phenomenon. The research is grounded in humanistic geography, particularly in Tuan’s (1983) distinction between space and place through experience; Bailly’s (1979) understanding of place as a result of physical, symbolic, and subjective interactions; and Merleau-Ponty’s (1999) phenomenology, which sees space as lived by the body in its relationship with the world. The methodology adopted was Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) with a qualitative emphasis, combined with field observations, semi-structured interviews, and ethnographic sketches conducted with residents, tourists, and passersby in the city center, systematized in what was called a “mosaic of perceptions”. The collected data allowed for the identification of affective bonds with public spaces and highlighted the importance of everyday practices in shaping the meaning of place. The results indicate that the urban environment goes beyond its functional dimension, revealing itself as a field for the production of memories, affections, and a sense of belonging. It is concluded that acknowledging these sensitive and subjective layers is essential to rethinking urban planning in a more inclusive and humanized way.
