MASLD and MASH: Steatotic liver disease joins the deadly quartet
Abstract
Metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is linked to insulin resistance and cardiometabolic disorders. This review synthesizes current information on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of MASLD and its progressive form, metabolic dysfunction– associated steatohepatitis (MASH), underscoring how to integrate established metabolic care with emerging treatments to address the growing MASLD burden. Like obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease is ubiquitous; however, awareness of it remains low.
