HIL Testing of Economic and Resilient Operation of Battery Storage Systems via Resilience Monitoring
Abstract
Micro-grids often use a combination of a battery and a grid-forming inverter to reduce the dependency of a grid segment on a constant power supply. Because these systems offer a high resilience against blackouts, it is expected that their numbers will grow in the coming years. This paper presents the Resilience-Monitor, a software that allows to use the rising battery capacity of these micro-grids optimally. It can find the optimal operation mode between following economic incentives and retaining battery capacity for emergencies. A Hardware-in-the-Loop environment was used to simulate a generic medium-voltage grid. Data from this grid simulation was used to verify and benchmark the Resilience-Monitor. The software was able to identify grid states with a low resilience across several different scenarios based on a KPI calculation. Furthermore, in critical situations the Resilience-Monitor could recommend preventive measures and dispatch control signals accordingly.
