Artificial intelligence in university learning: perceptions of Systems Engineering students at SIUA, Costa Rica
Abstract
This article explored the perception of Information Systems Engineering students at the National University (UNA), Interuniversity Campus of Alajuela (SIUA), regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their university learning. Through a survey of 83 students, aspects such as level of knowledge, frequency of use, benefits, risks, and the most commonly used tools were analyzed. The results showed that the majority use AI frequently, highlighting tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Photomath, Quill- Bot, and Grammarly. The students considered that these tools facilitate learning by providing explanations, immediate feedback, homework support, and access to intelligent educational resources. They also pointed out risks such as excessive dependence, academic plagiarism, and the loss of fundamental cognitive skills. Most believed that teachers should allow their use under regulated conditions. Based on the data, it was concluded that, although students have limited knowledge of various AI tools, they have a clear understanding of the risks associated with their use. However, they considered the tools they are familiar with to be useful and use them more frequently for personalized tutoring
