MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS IN BRAZIL: HOW ARE REVEALED IN THE NEWS
Abstract
Introduction: the inflationary index in recent years has increased the search for cheaper means of transport, such as motorcycles, thus increasing the number of accidents involving their drivers, due to the lack of basic safety mechanisms or recklessness, whose consequences range from hospitalizations to deaths. Objectives: to identify the epidemiological profile of people involved in motorcycle accidents and how they occur. Methodology: quantitative and qualitative approach, documentary, cross-sectional and descriptive, with DataSUS data on hospitalizations due to motorcycle accidents in the period from 2018 to 2021 and incident reports in September 2022. Results: the data reveal an average of 90,836.4 hospitalizations in the period, mostly composed of male drivers, aged between 19 and 40 years, black color/race, more frequent in the Southeast Region, average of 5.6 days of hospitalization and mortality rate of 1.78 . Five categories were constructed: classification of accidents; incident response; Determinant factors; temporality of the Accident; outcome of the accident. The reports reaffirm the profile traced with DataSUS data, and the more frequent occurrence of accidents in the form of collision, on weekends, with help provided by Firefighters and SAMU, even the outcome being death. Conclusion: there is a need for greater investment in traffic education with more effective actions so that this profile can be transformed, as the social and financial costs for the injured person, the family and the public coffers are high. Nurses play a fundamental role in the health education process.
