Abstract

This paper presents a method for diagnosing the condition of the wellbore based on the identification of reference circulation intervals using geological and engineering drilling data. The proposed approach utilizes actual drilling parameters – such as pressure, flow rate, loads, and equipment operating modes – enabling a shift from theoretical hydraulic estimates to an analysis of the actual state of the wellbore – drilling fluid – drill string system. An algorithm has been developed to identify stable hydrodynamic intervals using stability criteria and a moving time window. Based on the identified intervals, a diagnostic coefficient of hydraulic resistance is formed, which allows for an integral assessment of the influence of the wellbore geometry, the rheology of the drilling fluid, and the condition of the annular space. The method enables the detection of early signs of complications – such as increased hydraulic resistance, impaired wellbore cleaning, and pre-incident conditions – and improves the accuracy of pressure predictions when drilling parameters change. Implementing this approach in practice reduces uncertainty in drilling process management, enhances decision-making efficiency, and mitigates the risk of complications. The proposed solution is designed for integration into well drilling and workover geosupervision systems, serving as a foundation for predictive analytics and digital drilling control systems.
