Student Engagement in E-Learning: Challenges and Strategies for Higher Education

Oct 2026 · Общество и инновации · 0 citations

Abstract

The integration of e-learning into higher education has become a permanent part of higher education curricula, providing students with more flexibility, access and opportunities to learn on their own. But giving students access to learning materials online doesn't automatically equal them participating in a meaningful way. One of the significant challenges in online education is student engagement. Students can feel isolated, lack interaction, have distractions, struggle with self-regulation and have limited opportunities for collaboration. The article analyzes student engagement in e-learning and looks at what could lead to students' disengagement at higher education. It emphasizes especially interaction, the teacher's presence, feedback, cooperative learning, course design and the development of an online learning community. Based on previous studies, the article suggests that e-learning is not just about technology, but also about the pedagogical design that fosters interactions between the student, the teacher and the teaching material. The ways of making online learning more engaging are discussed in practice. The article ends with the observation that student engagement must be a key factor in designing e-learning, not a result of technology.
