Linking Circularity Metrics with Life‐Cycle Assessment for a Temporary Bridge in Portugal
Abstract
While well‐established frameworks exist for applying Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to the assessment of bridges, circularity remains less developed in this context, with most existing frameworks and indicators designed primarily for buildings. This paper addresses this gap by reviewing existing indicators used in CEN/TC 350 LCA framework to express circularity. These include indicators describing resource use and output flows. Furthermore, an LCA will be conducted, and the interrelations between environmental impact indicators and these circularity‐related indicators will be examined. The assessment focuses on an existing composite steel–concrete bridge, from the “Nó do Fratel” interchange in Portugal. Originally designed for a temporary use, this bridge is now closed and will undergo testing to evaluate the feasibility of reusing its components. Since the final application is not yet defined, alternative EoL scenarios are considered and compared: (i) material recovery and recycling, and (ii) component for reuse. The findings highlight the need for bridge‐specific circularity indicators, the integration of environmental indicators into circularity assessment, and the value of scenario‐based approaches when outcomes are uncertain.
