Abstract

We investigate the eigenvalues of Hermitian Toeplitz matrices generated by the symmetric Fisher-Hartwig symbol $\hat a(z) = (1-z)^{\alpha/2}(1-z^{-1})^{\alpha/2}$ for $\alpha \in (0,2)$. Using Dirichlet-Neumann bracketing of the discrete Laplacian, we establish explicit, non-asymptotic bounds for the individual eigenvalues. As a consequence, we prove that all eigenvalues are simple. We also obtain a two-term approximation for every eigenvalue, with explicit bounds on the remainder, as the size of the matrix tends to infinity. While known results are limited to $\alpha>1$, we bridge this gap by covering the full range of $\alpha \in (0,2)$. Our approach uses a construction of approximate eigenvectors that has not previously been applied in this setting.

Asymptotics of Hankel determinants for potentials with singular edge points

We establish the large-$n$ asymptotics of Hankel determinants for unitary random matrix ensembles possessing a higher-order edge singularity. We focus on ensembles where the equilibrium measure is supported on a single interval and the limiting eigenvalue density vanishes to order $2k+\frac{1}{2}$ for $k \in \mathbb{N}...

Universality for the extreme eigenvalues of Laplacian random matrices

We study the eigenvalues of the random Laplacian matrix $D - A$, where $A$ is a Wigner matrix with sub-Gaussian entries and the diagonal matrix $D$ contains the row sums of $A$. Our main results show that the extreme eigenvalues of this model exhibit Poisson statistics; in particular, after the appropriate centering an...

Absolutely summing Toeplitz operators on weighted Fock spaces

We study absolutely $r$-summing Toeplitz operators $T_f:F_\varphi^p\to F_\varphi^q$ with complex symbols. The weight has a uniformly positive and bounded real Hessian. The main difficulty is that local distance to holomorphic functions does not detect an entire part of the symbol, while the Toeplitz operator does. Usin...

Lidskii theorem for directional derivatives of symplectic eigenvalues

In this paper, we present a refinement of the symplectic Lidskii theorem for directional derivatives of symplectic eigenvalues, which is inspired by the work of Sendov [Electron. J. Linear Algebra 41(2025), 338-341]. We show that for a $2n \times 2n$ real positive definite matrix $A$ and symmetric matrices $H, K$ \begi...

Constraints on admissible behavior of GMRES applied to tridiagonal Toeplitz systems

The result of Greenbaum, Pt\'ak, and Strako\v{s} that for a given set of eigenvalues, any convergence curve is possible [SIMAX 1996] and the subsequent parameterization of such matrix-right-hand side pairs $(A,\mathbf{b})$ of Arioli, Pt\'ak, and Strako\v{s} [BIT 1998] demonstrated that the behavior of the GMRES could n...

Eigenvalue and Eigenvector Approximation for Random Matrices Using Low-Degree Polynomials

We initiate the study of approximating the top eigenvalue and eigenvector of a random symmetric matrix $ A \in \mathbb{R}^{n\times n} $ using $ q(A)b $ where $q$ is a degree-$d$ polynomial and $b$ is a standard Gaussian vector independent of $A$. For spiked GOE $ Y = \lambda vv^\top + X $, we identify $ d_\star = \frac...
