Rethinking Virtual Learning Environments in Resource-Constrained Contexts: Student Interaction, Effectiveness, and Digital Inequality in Latin American Higher Education

Abstract

Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) have become a central component of contemporary higher education; however, their effectiveness in resource-constrained contexts remains insufficiently examined. This study investigates the determinants of student experience, interaction, and perceived effectiveness of VLEs among undergraduate students in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the National University of the Altiplano (Peru). A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed, using a stratified random sample of 112 students enrolled in semesters four through eight. Data were analyzed through descriptive and correlational techniques to identify patterns, relationships, and key factors influencing learning outcomes. The findings reveal a predominantly positive perception of VLEs (57.1%), particularly regarding access to educational resources and the facilitation of student–instructor interaction. Nevertheless, important structural and pedagogical challenges persist. A significant proportion of students (50.9%) reported recurrent technical difficulties, while 38.4% perceived virtual learning as less effective than traditional face-to-face instruction. Teaching practices were largely mediated through videoconferencing platforms—primarily Zoom and Google Meet—indicating a platform-dependent instructional model with limited pedagogical diversification and reduced use of interactive or student-centered strategies. Moreover, gaps in personalized feedback, disparities in digital competencies, and insufficient institutional support mechanisms were identified as critical barriers to effective learning. These limitations suggest that access to technology alone is not sufficient to ensure meaningful educational experiences. This study contributes to the literature by providing context-sensitive empirical evidence from a public university in a resource-limited Latin American setting. It highlights the need to strengthen the integration of technological infrastructure with pedagogical innovation, emphasizing interaction design and student engagement. Accordingly, targeted institutional strategies are required to develop inclusive, adaptive, and pedagogically robust virtual learning ecosystems that respond effectively to the needs of underserved higher education contexts.

Communication Challenges in Virtual Learning Environments and Their Impact on Students’ Learning

The expanding role of information and communication technologies has fundamentally altered educational practice, a shift that became especially pronounced during the accelerated digital transition prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) now serve as central platforms that enable instructors and students to exchange resources, interact, collaborate, and complete assessments remotely. Their principal advantages—flexibility and accessibility—have made them particularly valuable for learners operating across varied locations and schedules. Yet the pedagogical potential of VLEs is frequently undermined by persistent communication difficulties that shape the quality of the learning experience. This conceptual paper reviews the principal communication challenges associated with VLEs and examines their consequences for student learning. Drawing on the existing literature, the analysis identifies a set of recurring obstacles: unreliable internet connectivity, diminished social presence, restricted interaction opportunities, delayed or insufficient feedback, uneven digital competencies, and reduced learner engagement. These issues extend beyond mere technical inconvenience; they influence students’ motivation, self-confidence, satisfaction, and academic outcomes. In many instances they also generate stress, feelings of isolation, and disparities in learning opportunity. If higher-education institutions wish VLEs to support genuine educational value, they must attend simultaneously to the technological infrastructure and the human dimensions of communication. The paper concludes that deliberate efforts to strengthen communication within VLEs are indispensable for enhancing student engagement, fostering deeper learning, and ensuring the long-term viability of digital education.

Virtual learning environments and teachers’ digital competencies in Peruvian education

The present study aligns with the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), Quality Education, it highlights the importance of robust virtual learning environments as key enablers of interactive, adaptive, tech teaching methods and learning processes. Under a context of accelerated digital transformation, the research aimed to determine the relationship between virtual environments and teachers’ digital competencies in an educational institution in Lambayeque, Peru, during 2024. A basic quantitative methodology was adopted, using a non-experimental, cross-sectional correlational design. The sample was composed of 51 teachers picked through non-probabilistic convenience sampling, and data were collected through the application of two structured questionnaires that assessed perceptions of virtual learning environments and levels of digital competencies. The results revealed a strong and statistically significant positive association between virtual environments and overall digital competencies (Spearman’s rho = 0.800; p < 0.001). The second variable was divided into three dimensions. Virtual environments showed a very strong association with technical competencies (rho = 0.901), a moderate association with educational competencies (rho = 0.581), and a weak association with programmatic competencies (rho = 0.120). These differentiated relationships gave us empirical evidence that virtual environments do not influence all the competencies uniformly, underlining the need for targeted strategies and teacher training policies aligned with inclusive, equal and high-quality education goals.

Virtual learning environments, academic performance, and student satisfaction: Quantitative evidence from anthropology undergraduates at a Peruvian public university

Using a quantitative methodology and a stratified random sampling method, data were obtained from 82 undergraduate Anthropology students at the National University of Altiplano (UNA) through an online questionnaire. This study explored the relationship between Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) and academic achievement. Student survey responses were analyzed for statistical significance to identify relationships among variables such as student satisfaction, quality of course material, perception of VLE experience enriching learning, teacher interaction with learners, and university support. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and a Likelihood Ratio Test were used to determine the relationship between survey responses and academic performance. The study found a positive relationship between student satisfaction with their learning experience, quality of course material, and the perceived effect of VLE experience on academic performance. No statistical significance was observed between teacher interaction with students and university tech support. Additionally, the absence of hands-on experiences, which are essential elements of learning in Anthropology, impeded academic success in virtual learning environments. Faculty should develop and provide students with instructional materials that are clear, relevant, and engaging for both faculty members and students. They should also utilize learner-centered teaching strategies, such as developing instructional materials to meet students’ needs and promoting higher engagement and participation. Emphasizing pedagogical strategies to enhance the quality of virtual education is crucial, especially for students enrolled in institutions with limited or no digital access.

Educational practices and learning outcomes in contemporary classroom settings

This study examined the influence of students' e-learning readiness on their satisfaction, as well as the moderating role of socio-demographic characteristics on this relationship among postgraduate distance education students at three Ghanaian universities: Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the University of Ghana, and the University of Cape Coast. The study was underpinned by social cognitive theory. Using a stratified sampling technique, the study selected 500 postgraduate students enrolled in distance education programs. It utilized partial least squares structural equation modeling, specifically the disjoint two-stage method in the reflective-reflective hierarchical component model. The analysis revealed that students’ readiness for e-learning has a positive and significant effect on student satisfaction. Most socio-demographic characteristics, such as academic field, sex, age, institution, and platform skills, exert an insignificant effect on students' satisfaction, except for skill tools, which have a significant influence. Additionally, socio-demographic factors like academic fields, institutions, and skill tools significantly moderate the relationship between students’ readiness for e-learning and their satisfaction. These findings suggest that tool-specific training and readiness assessments are essential to enhance e-learning satisfaction and promote equity. Universities should prioritize skill development over demographic profiling to reduce barriers, improve retention, and increase post-COVID satisfaction.

Virtual Learning Environments and Digital Learning Satisfaction among Generation Z Students

This study examines the influence of virtual learning environments on digital learning satisfaction among Generation Z students in higher education. The research employed a quantitative approach using a cross-sectional survey involving 320 undergraduate students from several Indonesian universities implementing online and hybrid learning systems. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis to evaluate the influence of system usability, interaction quality, and learning engagement on digital learning satisfaction. The findings reveal that all variables significantly influence students’ satisfaction, with system usability emerging as the strongest predictor. The study demonstrates that accessible platforms, effective communication, and active student participation are essential components of satisfying digital learning experiences. The findings contribute theoretically to digital learning literature and practically provide strategic insights for universities in designing more adaptive, interactive, and student-centered virtual learning environments.

Enhancing Junior High School Students’ English Proficiency Through Interactive Case-Based Learning

The integration of learner-centered pedagogy and digital technology has become increasingly important for improving English language learning outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of integrating CBL with interactive media to enhance students’ English language proficiency for junior high school students. The study employed an exploratory case study design using mixed methods. Participants included junior high school students and English teachers involved in the implementation of CBL supported by interactive media. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, questionnaires, classroom observations, and interviews. Instrument reliability analysis indicated acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.7613). The findings revealed substantial improvements in students’ learning outcomes. The mean score increased from 52.00 on the pre-test to 83.00 on the post-test, exceeding the minimum passing criterion of 75.00. Learning performance also became more consistent, as reflected in the reduction of the standard deviation from 6.51 to 3.61 and the increase in minimum scores from 45 to 74. Questionnaire results showed that student engagement demonstrated the strongest construct validity, while perceived improvement showed adequate validity and motivation exhibited a weaker correlation. Qualitative evidence further indicated higher levels of engagement, clearer understanding of learning materials, greater confidence in English use, and more active classroom interaction. The study concludes that integrating CBL with interactive media effectively enhances English proficiency, engagement, and learner confidence. These findings provide practical guidance for implementing technology-enhanced, learner-centered English instruction in secondary education.
