Abstract

This study examined the impact of corruption on the administrative system of Mubi North Local Government Council, Adamawa State. The objectives of the study were to identify the common causes of corruption as they relate to the administrative system in Mubi North Local Government Council, examine the impact of corruption on public trust in the administrative system, assess the effect of corruption on social service delivery, evaluate the influence of organizational factors on corruption, and examine the strategies adopted to mitigate corruption within the council's administrative system. The study adopted the Prebendalism Theory and employed a descriptive survey research design to collect, analyze, and interpret data. Data were collected through the administration of questionnaires to 384 respondents in Mubi North Local Government Council, out of which 340 questionnaires were retrieved and used for analysis. The data obtained were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of Hypothesis One (H₀₁) revealed that the causes of corruption significantly undermine the administrative system of Mubi North Local Government Council. Hypothesis Two (H₀₂) showed that corruption significantly undermines public trust in the administrative practices of the council. Hypothesis Three (H₀₃) also revealed that economic and social service delivery factors significantly affect the administrative system of the council. Furthermore, the findings indicated that weak oversight and monitoring mechanisms, political interference in administrative processes, lack of transparency in financial management, inadequate salaries and poor staff welfare, weak enforcement of anti-corruption laws, and insufficient administrative knowledge are the major causes of corruption in Mubi North Local Government Council. The study concludes that corruption has severely undermined public service delivery and the implementation of development projects in Mubi North Local Government Council. The study recommends that the government should strengthen oversight and monitoring mechanisms over local government administration to enhance accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery.
