Hybrid Bandwidth‐Extension Techniques for Dual‐Polarized Antenna and Its Array for Base Station Applications
Abstract
A broadband dual‐polarized base station antenna is proposed in this letter. Based on a conventional planar dipole antenna, the proposed design successfully excites the third and fourth resonances by introducing triangular slots and a reflector, significantly extending the impedance bandwidth. Independent resonance tuning capability is achieved using rectangular patches and l ‐shaped stubs. More importantly, a novel metasurface (MS) is loaded above the radiator, which simultaneously improves gain and impedance matching while reducing the profile height. Measured results demonstrate that the antenna achieves an impedance bandwidth of 95% (1.85−5.2 GHz). A 1 × 2 antenna array was fabricated to validate the scalability of the design, and the array achieves an average gain of 11.5 dBi. The proposed antenna exhibits excellent wideband performance and high gain, making it a highly suitable candidate for modern base station applications covering 3, 4, and 5 G frequency bands.
