If Gender is Equal, why the Difference? Examining the Dangers of the Feminist Movement

Sep 2026 · SIAR-Global Journal of Social Sciences & Legal Review · 0 citations · 3 references

Abstract

This article critically examines the persistent disparity between formal legal equality and actual gender outcomes, highlighting the risks involved with the contemporary feminist movement. The article contends that the feminist perspective on gender differences as primarily resulting from patriarchal oppression and systemic discrimination is fundamentally erroneous. The essay utilises empirical research from economics, psychology, and sociology to substantiate its assertions. Equality of opportunity may potentially foster, rather than eliminate, specific forms of gender disparity, as indicated by the Scandinavian paradox, which posits that the gender gap in STEM fields is most pronounced in the most egalitarian cultures. The article identifies three principal hazards of current feminism. The perils include the fostering of a victimhood culture that diminishes women's agency; the devaluation of domesticity and motherhood, which engenders unrealistic expectations for women's lives; and the adversarial portrayal of gender relations, which estranges men and exacerbates a crisis of male identity. This essay aims to promote a more sophisticated comprehension of gender that recognizes the intricate interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors in generating gendered outcomes. The paper utilizes poststructuralist feminist theory and critiques of biological determinism to substantiate its argument. A defensible feminist, as concluded in the article, would recognise that equality and difference are not antagonistic but rather complementary, and it would pursue collaboration rather than conflict with men rather than conflict between the sexes. Four recommendations are offered for a more comprehensive and inclusive approach to the issue of gender equality.
