SAFETY, RELIABILITY AND OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE OF RENEWABLE-ENERGY INSTALLATIONS: FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC BAUCHI AS CASE STUDY

Sep 2026 · International Journal of Engineering Research and Technology · 0 citations

Abstract

The increasing deployment of renewable-energy installations in tertiary institutions has created opportunities for improving electricity availability, reducing dependence on conventional power sources and supporting sustainable campus development. However, the effectiveness of such installations depends on electrical safety, equipment reliability, maintenance quality and sustained operational performance. This study assesses the safety, reliability and operational performance of renewable-energy installations at Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Nigeria. Four objectives guide the study: identify and characterize existing renewable-energy installations and their major components; assess their level of safety compliance and reliability; evaluate their operational performance and identify factors responsible for performance deficiencies; and develop an institutional framework for improving safety, reliability and operational performance. A descriptive evaluative case-study design is proposed, combining physical inspection, component inventory, document review, operational records, technical measurements and structured assessment against applicable IEC and Nigerian requirements. Data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, safety-compliance indices, reliability indicators, performance ratios, availability, conformity-gap analysis and risk-priority assessment. The study will report numerical results using overall and installation-specific safety, reliability and operational-performance indices. The expected framework will integrate component standardization, preventive maintenance, protection and earthing, monitoring, periodic inspection, personnel competency, documentation and risk-based maintenance. The study is intended to provide an evidence-based institutional approach for improving the safety, dependability and operational effectiveness of renewable-energy installations at Federal Polytechnic Bauchi and provide a transferable model for similar tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
