Sep 2026 · European Journal of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry · 0 citations

Abstract

Background: Digital transformation is reshaping healthcare through the integration of electronic health records, telemedicine, artificial intelligence, automation, connected devices, data analytics, and interoperable digital platforms. However, the extent to which these technologies translate into measurable improvements in healthcare organizations remains unclear. Objective: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of digital transformation and artificial intelligence on healthcare service quality, patient safety, and operational efficiency, while identifying key organizational and implementation factors influencing outcomes. Methods: A systematic search was conducted across major medical, multidisciplinary, and technology databases for empirical studies published between January 2018 and September 2026. Studies evaluating digital transformation initiatives in real healthcare settings and reporting outcomes related to service quality, patient safety, or operational efficiency were included. Study selection followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines, and methodological quality was assessed using appropriate critical appraisal tools. Findings were synthesized using a framework-based narrative approach. Results: Digital transformation was associated with improvements in care coordination, accessibility, patient monitoring, workflow efficiency, resource utilization, and selected safety outcomes. Benefits were influenced by interoperability, digital maturity, workforce readiness, leadership support, and system integration. Implementation challenges included cybersecurity risks, poor usability, data-quality problems, resistance to change, and fragmented digital infrastructure. Conclusion: Digital transformation can improve healthcare performance when technology adoption is accompanied by workflow redesign, organizational readiness, effective governance, and continuous evaluation.
