Abstract
The first publications in physics education research can be traced to the early 20th Century. However, intense research and development has occurred primarily over the last 50 years. This panel discussed some key developments of Physics Education Research (PER) over the past 50 years. Panel members also shared some of their most prominent personal experiences, frustrations, successes and failures while having been active for these 50 years in our field. The discussion of the panel session was led by Wim Peeters.
