Abstract

Background: This study explores the roles of community forestry in biodiversity conservation, specifically focusing on Srijana Community Forest, Birendranagar-2, Surkhet. It examines conservation efforts and highlights challenges related to biodiversity conservation. Objective: The primary aim of the study is to explore the roles of community forestry in conserving biodiversity and its subsequent advantages for local communities.  Methods: The research uses a descriptive and exploratory design and purposive sampling to select 131 households from 198 CFUG households in Birendranagar-2, Surkhet. Primary data were collected through a structured questionnaire and interviews with CFUG Committee members and forest users.  Findings: Most respondents (32.82%) undertake climate-resilient forest conservation, habitat conservation (23.66%), and watershed conservation (17.55%). Further, 38.93% are involved in afforestation; 65.64% of them get the seedlings from the Division Forest Office, and 52.67% of respondents are involved in the selection of plants from the Forest users. Community members are engaged in activities that reduce fire risk (29%), patrolling (19.08%), illegal trade (35.87%), forest fires, and climate change. The data show the existence of active community participation in biodiversity conservation activities through the community forests. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the development of policies to conserve biodiversity sustainably. The pressure of the human population harms biodiversity, creating challenges for local governments and development programs.  Novelty: This research provides new insights in conserving biodiversity, offering recommendations for better management strategies and highlighting the role of the Forest Office, local government, and community awareness in addressing these issues.
