Antibiotic Resistance Profile of Enterobacteriaceae Isolated from the Urine of Outpatients with Urinary Tract Infection in Oran, Algeria
Abstract
Antibiotic resistance is a major public health problem worldwide. The purpose of this study was to identify the bacteria that cause UTIs in outpatients and to evaluate their antibiotic resistance. Bacterial isolation was performed by collecting 231 urine samples from outpatients. Presumptive identification of Enterobacteriaceae was carried out on bacterial isolates, and their antibiotic sensitivity was subsequently evaluated. The results revealed that female urine samples accounted for 80.5% of the urine samples. The age groups that were most frequently represented were 71–80 years (14.8%), 61–70 years (11.7%) and 21–30 years (11.7%). Sixty-one percent of all bacterial isolates were E. coli. In contrast, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter spp., Proteus mirabilis, Enterococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Citrobacter spp. and Acinetobacter spp. represent 9.1%, 7.8%, 6.1%, 4.8%, 4.8%, 2.2%, 1.7%, 1.3%, and 0.4%, respectively. The number of female patients with E. coli increased fivefold over that of male patients (p= 0.001). E. coli isolates were resistant to ampicillin (65.7%), amoxicillin (65.7%), cephalotin (31.2%), cephalexin (26.6%), cephaclor (26.6%), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (33.8%) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (35.5%), according to the distribution of antibiotic resistance via the chi-square test. Both ampicillin and amoxicillin were ineffective against isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Ampicillin (100%), amoxicillin (100%), cephalotin (72%), cefazolin (72.2%), cefotaxime (61.1%), cephalexin (72.2%), cephaclor (72.2%), amoxicillin/ clavulanic acid (77.8%) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole cefotaxime (61.1%) are highly resistant in Enterobacter spp. isolates. However, isolates of Proteus mirabilis presented resistance to ampicillin (71.4%), amoxicillin (71.4%), cephalotin (42.9%), cefazolin (42.9%), cephalexin (42.9%), cephaclor (42.9%), and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (42.9%).
