Abstract

This research paper meticulously examines the impact, usage techniques, and structural elegance of ancient Tamil literature in the pioneer of modern Tamil historical novels—the late Kalki Krishnamurthy’s Ponniyin Selvan—adhering strictly to academic research methodologies. The paper critically analyzes Kalki’s evolution of Tamil consciousness—starting from his experience with Thiru. Vi. Kalyanasundaram’s Navasakti journal—and the socio-political backdrop of the 1950s in which the novel was conceived. It details the methodology used to integrate Sangam literature, Thirukkural, epics like Silappathikaram, Shaivite Thirumuraigal, and Nalayira Divya Prabandham into the plot construction and character development. Furthermore, it presents a balanced discussion on the supportive and critical perspectives among various scholars regarding the blending of classical literature into historical fiction, alongside an assessment of Kalki’s own poetic artistry.
