Optimizing Logistics Ecosystems: Evaluating the Performance of Smart Port Enterprises
Abstract
The rapid development of smart ports has revolutionized the maritime industry, leveraging advanced technologies and data analytics to enhance efficiency, productivity, and sustainability. However, assessing and optimizing the performance of smart ports remains a complex challenge. This study proposes a comprehensive framework for evaluating and improving smart port efficiency using a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach. The methodology integrates the Malmquist Index, which measures productivity changes over time, and the Super Slacks-Based Measure (Super SBM) model, which identifies specific areas of inefficiency. The study aims to assess changes in smart ports' overall efficiency and productivity, identify sources of inefficiency, and propose targeted optimization strategies. The research methodology involves a comprehensive literature review, with a particular emphasis on the application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models in the logistics sector. The empirical analysis uses data from a representative sample of smart ports, and the findings are examined in light of their implications for port management and decision-making. The results reveal that Evergreen Marine Corp (P6) and Westports Holdings Bhd (P9) consistently exhibited high efficiency levels throughout the study period. This observation underscores their remarkable resilience and adaptability as they navigate evolving market conditions. The sustained efficiency performance of these two ports serves as a testament to their robust operational strategies and effective resource management practices. The proposed framework offers a data-driven approach for port authorities, logistics service providers, and policymakers to benchmark performance, identify best practices, and allocate resources effectively. The study advances smart port research by offering a novel methodological approach and practical insights for optimizing logistics systems in the era of digitalization.
