Abstract

Purpose

Two smart walking aid aids were conceptualised to respond to mobility needs of older adults, including a Walker with Intelligent and Safe Navigation (DENIS), and an Individual Vehicle with Intelligent Verticalization and Navigation Aid for Autonomy (VIVIANA). The aim of this study was to explore perceived acceptability of DENIS and VIVIANA among healthcare professionals (HCPs), specifically exploring factors that influence intention to use.

Methods

An exploratory multi-method study was conducted. Acceptability of the concepts for DENIS and VIVIANA were explored among HCPs working in LTC settings. HCPs completed the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) questionnaire to explore performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating conditions. Semi-structured individual and group discussions were used to descriptively nuance the same constructs. Correlations and multivariate regression analyses were conducted to explore predictors of intention to use and future use. Individual and group discussions were narratively summarised.

Results

Thirty-nine HCPs with 15.3 ± 9.2 years of experience completed the UTAUT and participated in individual or group discussions. HCPs reported high acceptability and intention to use both technologies in the future. Intention to use DENIS was predicted by profession and social influence, while effort expectancy was the main predictor of intention to use VIVIANA.

Conclusion

Both smart mobility aids were deemed acceptable by HCPs. Practical considerations such as training, cost, and maintenance highlight the importance of actively involving HCPs in the design and implementation of these technologies in LTC settings.
