Abstract

Whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) are among the most destructive pests of vegetables and ornamental crops, causing severe yield losses through phloem feeding and virus transmission. Although historically most research has centered on Bemisia tabaci, the greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum is rapidly emerging as a major pest across sub-Saharan Africa. Its spread in both open-field and protected cropping systems is linked to shifts in land use, climate variability, and intensified production systems. Furthermore, growing insecticide resistance to commonly used insecticides threatens existing control efforts. Despite these trends, T. vaporariorum has received comparatively limited attention. This review collates current evidence on its distribution, host range, economic importance, and genetic variation, while also examining both established and emerging management approaches. Moreover, it highlights critical research gaps and outlines priorities for future research, arguing for a renewed focus on this species as an increasingly important pest that demands more integrated and ecologically grounded solutions.

Entomopathogenic Fungi for Climate-Resilient Pest Management: A Critical Appraisal of Ecology, Formulation, Field Efficacy and Emerging Technologies

Hypocrealean entomopathogenic fungi, chiefly species of Beauveria and Metarhizium, constitute the largest group of registered microbial agents for arthropod pest control. Their performance in the field depends on temperature, solar ultraviolet radiation and moisture, which are precisely the variables being reshaped by...

Stemphylium vesicarium: a rising threat to European horticulture

Stemphylium vesicarium is an emerging multi-host fungal pathogen that increasingly threatens European and global horticulture. Initially recognized as the causal agent of brown spot of pear and Stemphylium leaf blight of onion, the pathogen is now associated with diseases of other economically important crops, inc...

Biological Characteristics and Research Progress of the Rice Leaf Beetle Oulema oryzae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Criocerinae)

The rice leaf beetle, Oulema oryzae, is a pest across eastern Asia and eastern Russia; both its larval and adult stages cause considerable yield losses through foliar consumption. Its obligate diapause ensures population persistence through adverse seasons, but this strategy also hampers outbreak predictability and com...

Management of Tetranychus urticae Koch Using Predatory Mites and Essential Oils: Current Strategies and Future Perspectives

The widespread development of acaricide resistance in the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, has intensified the need for sustainable pest management strategies. This narrative review examines phytoseiid predatory mites and essential oils as complementary components of integrated pest management against T. u...

Field Efficacy of Pasteuria penetrans against Meloidogyne incognita infecting Tuberose

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) is a commercially important ornamental crop valued for its attractive flowers and pleasant fragrance. However, its productivity is severely affected by the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, which contribute to nearly 10% of global yield reduction in tuberose. The present study...
