Design Evaluation of a Camshaft used in Multi Cylinder Engine Using Materials Forged Steel and Aluminum Alloy

Oct 2026 · International Journal for Research in Applied Science and Engineering Technology · 0 citations

Abstract

The camshaft is a critical component in multi-cylinder engines, responsible for controlling the timing and operation of intake and exhaust valves. This study focuses on the design and evaluation of a camshaft using two different materials: forged steel and aluminum alloy. The objective is to compare their performance in terms of strength, weight, stress distribution, and durability under operating conditions. A 3D model of the camshaft is developed and analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA) techniques. Key parameters such as maximum stress, deformation, factor of safety, and fatigue life are evaluated for both materials under identical loading and boundary conditions. Forged steel, known for its high strength and wear resistance, is expected to exhibit lower deformation and higher durability. In contrast, aluminum alloy offers the advantage of reduced weight, which can improve engine efficiency and reduce inertia forces. The results highlight the trade-offs between strength and weight, providing insights into material selection for optimized camshaft design in multi-cylinder engines. The study concludes with recommendations for selecting suitable materials based on performance requirements, cost considerations, and application-specific demands.
