Abstract

The widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in many sectors, like healthcare, finance, law enforcement, public administration and other sectors, has led to a pressing global debate on the ethical management of AI. The article focuses on the main AI ethics frameworks developed at the international, regional and national levels and considers how these are manifested in policy and legal compliance action. The paper highlights four recurring elements across the four policies (transparency, accountability, fairness, privacy and human oversight) and outlines major differences in terms of scope, enforcement and sectoral applicability. The paper also proposes that good compliance architecture should be included not only in legal but also in institutional arrangements, such as ethics-by-design approaches, in corporate governance and in public procurement. The results have immediate relevance for attorneys, tech providers and regulators grappling with the future of AI regulation.
