Sep 2026 · Harmoni · 0 citations

Abstract

This study aims to examine the process of functional transformation of Taman Alam Lumbini in Berastagi from a Buddhist place of worship into a religious tourism destination, as well as to analyze the efforts to preserve its sacredness. This research employs a qualitative approach with a field research method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that the functional change of this area occurred gradually and was not initially planned as a tourist attraction. The main drivers of this transformation include the magnificent architecture of the Myanmar-style Shwedagon Pagoda replica, a strong cultural identity, and the massive spread of information through social media. Despite evolving into a tourist destination, Taman Alam Lumbini maintains its primary function as a place of worship through the routine performance of religious rituals. The management also implements access restriction strategies during specific times to maintain the solemnity of worship. While this transformation provides positive economic impacts for the local community through the growth of small businesses, it demands balanced management to ensure that the sacred values of the area are preserved amidst the pressures of modern tourism commercialization.
