Abstract
Magnetic fields exert a strong influence on plasma behavior, highlighting the need for diagnostic techniques that can measure magnetic fields with high accuracy while minimizing plasma perturbation. Quantum Beat Spectroscopy (QBS), recently demonstrated by Gilbert et al. [Plasma Sources Sci. Technol. 34 025020 (2025)] in a laboratory plasma, is a laser-based optical diagnostic that provides Doppler-free measurements of magnetic field strength. In this study, a femtosecond laser is employed in an argon plasma to investigate the dependence of the QBS signal on the polarization of the incident laser. The experiments are conducted in a tabletop six-way cross vacuum chamber. A pair of Helmholtz coils is mounted on a rotational stage such that the chamber remains centered between the coils, enabling precise control over the orientation of the applied magnetic field. The present study shows that the quantum beat amplitude strongly depends on the polarization of the injected laser. It is also demonstrated that excitation from a single initial state into a coherent superposition of two excited magnetic sublevels is a necessary condition for the observation of quantum beats. Furthermore, it is shown that the magnetic field orientation can be determined by rotating the polarization of the injected laser.
Measurements of plasma electric fields are essential to the advancement of plasma science and applications. Performing non-invasive in situ measurements of plasma fields on sub-millimeter length scales with high sensitivity over a large range of field magnitude remains an outstanding challenge. We introduce and demonst...

We investigate an all-optical scheme for high-sensitivity measurements of the Earth's scale magnetic field ($B$). The scheme is based on the Bell-Bloom technique with frequency-modulated light. A single elliptically polarized light beam is used both for pumping the alkali-metal atoms and probing Larmor precession of th...

Strong field atomic frustrated double ionization (FDI) represents a novel approach for ultrafast preparation and control of highly excited ions. A comprehensive understanding of its mechanism is of fundamental significance. However, current interpretations are restricted to the dipole approximation. Here, the nondipole...

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are promising quantum sensors for AC magnetic fields. However, conventional dynamical-decoupling-based magnetometry becomes technically demanding at high frequencies because of the requirement for increasingly short and high-power microwave pulses. This paper describes an AC mag...

The control and perturbation of quantum phenomena with magnetic fields is an indispensable tool in materials research. Recently, in situ field tuning was implemented into angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (magneto-ARPES), which provides direct momentum and energy-resolved information of the field-dependent elec...
