Determinants of socio-cultural space development in the modern city: systematic analysis and interaction mechanisms

Abstract

The study is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the key factors determining the formation and dynamics of the socio-cultural space of a modern city. Based on systemic and interdisciplinary approaches, six interconnected groups of determinants are identified and structured: socio-economic, cultural, political-administrative, spatial-architectural, and technological. The central thesis is the proof of the non-linear and synergistic nature of their interaction, in which the development of the urban environment appears not because of the isolated influence of individual forces, but because of complex, dynamic configurations of these factors. The configuration of the leading determinants is highly context- and stage-dependent, varying according to the stage of development of the urban organism. The scientific novelty of the work lies in overcoming the fragmented approach and proposing a holistic analytical model that systematizes heterogeneous formative factors into a unified theoretical framework. The originality of the research is also manifested in identifying and comparatively analysing specific synergy mechanisms using three practical scenarios: strategic managed synthesis (industrial zone revitalization), grassroots community-initiated processes (tactical urbanism), and technologically mediated synergy (creation of “smart” public spaces). These cases clearly demonstrate the variability of urban environment transformation pathways and prove the absence of a universal sequence for activating determinants. The practical significance of the research lies in developing an analytical toolkit for strategic planning and managing the sustainable development of the urban environment. The proposed systemic approach allows for a transition from fragmented solutions to holistic design that considers the complex interplay of economic, social, cultural, political, architectural, and technological aspects in shaping a comfortable and socially oriented urban environment.
