Bakla Ako Hindi Bakla Lang: Voices Behind Silence-Identity, Talent, Resistance, and Constrained Intellectual Flourishing in Educational Spaces
Abstract
This study explored the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ Senior High School students in constrained educational spaces, focusing on the intersection of identity expression, talent development, and resistance. Anchored on Queer Theory and Critical Pedagogy, the research aimed to understand how LGBTQIA+ learners negotiate their identities, experience institutional constraints, and sustain their intellectual, creative, and emotional capacities within school environments that are often shaped by heteronormative norms. A qualitative phenomenological research design was employed. Data were gathered through in-depth semi-structured interviews with selected LGBTQIA+ Senior High School students who had experienced identity suppression within their educational contexts. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data, leading to five major themes: (1) Negotiated Identities in Constrained Spaces, (2) Silencing Mechanisms and Institutional Invisibility, (3) Hidden Brilliance: Talent Amid Suppression, (4) Resistance and Quiet Defiance, and (5) Constrained Intellectual Flourishing and the Disruption of Full Academic Potential. Findings revealed that while participants experienced identity-based constraints and institutional invisibility, they also demonstrated significant intellectual capability, creativity, and resilience. However, many expressed a sense of incomplete self-realization, describing their cognitive and personal development as partially restricted due to non-inclusive educational environments. The study highlights the paradox of LGBTQIA+ learners as both marginalized and highly capable individuals whose full potential remains underrecognized. The study concludes that educational institutions must move beyond symbolic inclusion and foster genuinely affirming environments that support both identity expression and intellectual flourishing.
