Women in Communication Research: A Thematic and Epistemological Analysis from a Gender Perspective
Abstract
This study analyses the presence of women as an object of research in the field of communication from a gender perspective. A mixed-method approach is employed, combining a systematic literature review and a content analysis of 350 articles indexed in Scopus during 2025, selected using the search terms “women” and “communication.” The results show that research is mainly concentrated on the geographical origin of the women studied, health-related topics, and analyses of women's participation in roles traditionally associated with men. Other areas addressed include sexuality, social vulnerability, the digital environment, and language. However, studies specifically focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment remain a minority. In conclusion, although women increasingly appear as a focus of analysis in communication research, traditional thematic approaches persist, and perspectives that more deeply challenge gender structures in knowledge production remain limited.
