Electromagnetic design and performance analysis of a MW-scale multiphase main propulsion motor
Abstract
This paper presents the electromagnetic design and performance verification of a 1.5 MW 12-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for ship propulsion. To reduce torque ripple and improve power density, a 12-phase open-end winding topology combined with an optimized V-shaped interior permanent magnet rotor is proposed. Based on electromagnetic design analysis, a finite element model is established to evaluate the electromagnetic performance and optimize the key structural parameters. The simulation results under no-load, rated-load, and overload conditions demonstrate that the motor achieves a torque ripple of 0.25%, and an efficiency of 97.6%, while satisfying thermal and noise requirements. The study confirms the validity of the proposed design methodology for MW-scale ship propulsion applications.
