Efficient and Accurate Dynamic Phasor Estimation for P- and M-Class Compliant PMUs
Abstract
This article presents an efficient and accurate dynamic phasor estimator for phasor measurement units (PMUs) operating under the IEC/IEEE 60255-118-1 standard. First, a singular energy spectrum (SES)-based adaptive model order determination scheme is proposed to robustly identify the number of components under noise and dynamic disturbances. Then, a multifrequency real-valued Taylor weighted least-squares method is utilized to jointly estimate frequencies, phasors, and rate-of-change-of-frequency (ROCOF) values of time-varying multicomponent signals with high accuracy and low computational burden. Combining these two parts yields a unified estimator that is simultaneously compliant with P- and M-class performance requirements and capable of tracking the parameters of multifrequency components. Extensive simulations under static and dynamic tests, together with hardware experiments using a power quality calibrator, show that the proposed method significantly outperforms the TWLSMP estimator while reducing runtime by about three to four times.
