Transforming kuwaiti sadu shajarah motifs into contemporary ready-to-wear fashion using hybrid textile techniques: a practice-based research (PBR) approach
Abstract
Purpose – This study develops a Practice-Based Research (PBR) framework for transforming the Shajarah motif of traditional Kuwaiti Sadu into contemporary ready-to-wear fashion through hybrid textile techniques (patchwork, sashiko, and cording) while preserving its visual and cultural identity. Methods – A qualitative PBR approach positioned creative practice as the primary means of knowledge generation. It involved museum observation, motif analysis, digital transformation, four iterative textile experiments, garment prototyping, reflective documentation, and appraisal by six experts in cultural heritage, textile design, and fashion production. Findings – The resulting five-stage framework comprises motif identification, structural and visual analysis, design transformation, hybrid textile experimentation and garment implementation, and expert appraisal with reflective refinement. Lightweight cotton-based materials, controlled colour contrast, balanced decorative layering, and symmetrical motif placement enhanced textile flexibility, motif readability, aesthetic harmony, and garment functionality. The fourth experiment and second prototype achieved the most satisfactory outcomes while retaining the motif's recognizable cultural character. Research Implications – The framework offers practical guidance for designers, vocational fashion educators, and researchers reinterpreting textile heritage, serving as a reference for future vocational learning design rather than a tested pedagogical model. It may be adapted to other traditional textiles. Future studies should examine broader materials, consumer acceptance, and industrial feasibility. Originality – This study proposes a transferable, procedurally transparent PBR framework that extends heritage-based fashion design methodology by systematically integrating cultural interpretation, hybrid textile experimentation, and garment development for contemporary ready-to-wear fashion.
