Abstract
The article comparatively examines the etymological motivation of English and Uzbek phraseological units expressing the meanings of life and death. Their formation is systematized through historical events, religious worldview, everyday and professional experience, folklore and other cultural sources; special attention is paid to the relation between inner form and present-day semantics. The analysis shows that the source of motivation influences not only origin but also connotation, euphemistic function and the choice of translation equivalents.
