PRINCIPLES OF THE HOLY QUR’AN ON SOCIAL CONTRACTS AND THEIR CONTEMPORARY RELEVANCE: AN ACADEMIC ANALYSIS
Abstract
This article examines the Qur'anic principles of social contracts and explores their relevance to contemporary society. It analyzes key Qur'anic values that underpin social relationships and collective responsibility, including justice (ʿadl), the fulfillment of agreements and covenants, trustworthiness, and honesty, the avoidance of indecency and immorality, and cooperation in righteousness. These principles provide an ethical framework for promoting justice, accountability, social cohesion and mutual responsibility among individuals, communities, and institutions. The study argues that these Qur'anic principles are not limited to their historical or religious context but possess universal ethical significance that remains applicable to modern social and institutional life. In the face of contemporary challenges such as globalization, materialism, and shifting social values, these principles offer practical guidance for strengthening ethical conduct, protecting human rights, fostering good governance, and promoting the common good. By highlighting the enduring relevance of the Qur'anic approach to social contracts, the article demonstrates how these foundational values can contribute to the development of just, stable, and morally responsible societies. The findings suggest that the Qur'anic framework provides a comprehensive basis for addressing contemporary social and ethical challenges while reinforcing the importance of justice, trust, and collective responsibility.
