TL;DR

The findings indicate that the mammalian stomach shares conserved molecular programs while also exhibiting species- and chamber-associated differences, providing useful information for understanding mammalian digestive diversity and ruminant stomach specialization.

Abstract

Simple Summary This study compared gene expression patterns in stomach tissues from 11 mammalian species. We identified a group of genes that were consistently expressed across species and mainly involved in basic cellular functions. In contrast, many genes showed different expression patterns among species, reflecting the diversity of mammalian stomach biology. Ruminants also showed a distinct set of genes related to epithelial function, ion transport, defense, and metabolism. We further compared the four stomach chambers of sheep, goats, cattle, and deer. The rumen, reticulum, and omasum constitute the forestomach and showed relatively similar gene-expression patterns, whereas the abomasum, the glandular true stomach, was clearly distinct and was mainly associated with secretion and digestion. These findings indicate that the mammalian stomach shares conserved molecular programs while also exhibiting species- and chamber-associated differences, providing useful information for understanding mammalian digestive diversity and ruminant stomach specialization.

Construction of multi-tissue transcriptome map and analysis of tissue-specific genes in Tan sheep.

The genetic regulatory mechanisms underlying key economic traits in Tan sheep remain unclear. To systematically analyze gene expression patterns across multiple tissues in Tan sheep, this study selected 20 male Tan sheep aged 6 months from the same rearing background. Tissue samples were collected from the heart, liver...

Tract-wide transcriptomic and metabolomic profiling reveals gastrointestinal regionalization in Jiekarzi semi-fine wool sheep.

Jiekarzi semi-fine-wool sheep are indigenous to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and may face substantial demands on digestive efficiency under low temperatures, hypoxia and seasonal forage limitation. However, the molecular organization of the gastrointestinal tract in this breed remains insufficiently characterized. Here,...

Genome-wide identification of the LLTP superfamily in three cuttlefish species and expression profiling in Sepiella japonica.

The large lipid transfer protein (LLTP) superfamily, characterized by a conserved LPD_N domain, plays important roles not only in lipid transport but also in diverse physiological processes, including animal development, reproduction, and immunity. However, comprehensive characterization of the LLTP gene family in cutt...

Multiple drivers of genomic novelty across ruminants

Summary Ruminants are among the most ecologically and economically important groups of mammals and have accumulated some of the most remarkable traits and genomes across metazoans. Using genomic-scale data representing all ruminant families, we examined the traits that explain evolutionary rates across ruminant lineage...

Multi-Tissue Transcriptomic Profiles of Tarim and Tianshan Red Deer Under Common Conditions

We profiled 132 RNA-sequencing libraries representing 11 tissues from six Tarim and six Tianshan adult male red deer maintained under common feeding and management. Tissue identity dominated expression structure among 16,308 expressed genes. Across three differential-expression model specifications, 1253 robust group-a...

Transcriptomic analysis reveals members and expression characteristics of innate immunity genes in Chinese scorpion Mesobuthus martensii

Transcriptome analyses of different M. martensii tissues revealed significant variability in immune gene expression, particularly in the blood, which might reflect variations in innate immune capabilities influenced by evolutionary processes and behavioral adaptations.
