Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the most priority environmental pollutants with numerous anthropogenic and natural sources. Alaska pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) is one of the most important commercial fishery resources in Russia. Due to its ecological characteristics, it may be particularly susceptible to the impact of these compounds. This study investigated pollock collected in the Amur Liman of the Sea of Okhotsk, determined the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in its organs, discussed their potential sources, and compared the obtained values with regulatory standards from various countries worldwide. PAHs were detected in all samples. The highest concentrations of total and high-molecular-weight compounds were recorded in fish liver, which corresponds to its highest lipid content and function in the organism. The levels of low-molecular-weight hydrocarbons did not differ significantly between organs, indicating chronic pollution. The primary distribution of concentrations followed the order: liver > male gonads > eggs > muscle (significantly or as a trend). An assessment of qualitative composition revealed a predominance of low-molecular-weight compounds in the overall profile, among which naphthalene, phenanthrene, and fluorene were dominant. Among high-molecular-weight congeners, pyrene, chrysene, and fluoranthene predominated. The qualitative profile of the Alaska pollock completely matched previously obtained PAH levels in water for this area. Key diagnostic ratios of PAHs indicate a predominance of compounds of petrogenic origin, which corresponds to the specific geochemical conditions of the Amur Liman (presence of oil deposits) as well as high anthropogenic pressure. Comparing PAH levels in fish organs with Russian and international standards revealed its complete non-compliance with safety requirements for smoked products concerning the content of the sum of four of the most hazardous and widespread PAHs – benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, and chrysene – as stipulated by the EU. This points to a serious PAH burden on commercial aquatic species and underscores the need to update existing regulations regarding the control of their content in food products.
