Abstract

This study assessed the effect of stakeholder interventions on the performance of INKOMOKO’s community livelihood projects in Mahama Refugee Camp, Kirehe District, Rwanda. The study was motivated by the continued underperformance and sustainability challenges of community livelihood projects, often associated with inadequate stakeholder coordination, limited resource contributions, insufficient capacity building, and weak stakeholder relationships. The main objective was to examine how stakeholder salience, stakeholder resource contribution, stakeholder capacity building, and stakeholder relationships influence project performance in terms of quality, cost, scope, and timeliness. A quantitative research design was adopted to analyse numerical data. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires, complemented by interviews and documentary review. The target population comprised 500 project staff, stakeholders, and beneficiaries, from which a sample size of 223 respondents was selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics with SPSS. The findings revealed that all stakeholder intervention dimensions had a statistically significant positive effect on the performance of community livelihood projects, with a 68.7% rate of contribution to the performance of INKOMOKO Community livelihood projects, with stakeholder resource contribution and stakeholder relationships showing the strongest influence. These findings imply that effective stakeholder engagement and coordinated support are critical determinants of project success and sustainability. The study concluded that strengthening stakeholder interventions enhances the performance of community livelihood projects and recommended that INKOMOKO and its partners should prioritise inclusive stakeholder engagement, structured capacity-building programs, coordinated resource mobilisation, and strong relationship management throughout the project lifecycle.
