Development of Language Skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) through Digital Platforms

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technologies has significantly transformed the process of foreign language teaching and learning. Digital platforms, mobile applications, virtual learning environments, online collaboration tools, and artificial intelligence-based technologies provide learners with new opportunities to develop the four main language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This study examines the role of digital platforms in foreign language learning and analyzes their potential for improving learners’ linguistic and communicative competence. Particular attention is paid to the use of digital technologies in developing listening comprehension through authentic audio and audiovisual materials, speaking skills through virtual communication and artificial intelligence-based chatbots, reading skills through electronic and interactive texts, and writing skills through online collaboration and digital writing tools. The study also discusses the major advantages of digital technologies, including accessibility, flexibility, personalization, interactivity, immediate feedback, and increased learner motivation. At the same time, challenges such as the digital divide, insufficient technical infrastructure, limited digital competencies among teachers, distraction, and information security risks are considered. Special attention is given to the digitalization of foreign language teaching in Azerbaijan and the growing role of mobile learning and artificial intelligence. The analysis demonstrates that the effective and pedagogically appropriate integration of digital technologies can create a more flexible, interactive, learner-centered, and effective environment for foreign language education.
