The Landscape of the Gig Economy in APO Member Countries: Similarities and Heterogeneities

Sep 2026 · 0 citations

Abstract

The gig economy has grown rapidly worldwide, driven by digitalization and online work platforms. Through greater flexibility and short-term employment arrangements, it has expanded job opportunities for workers, businesses, and consumers, improving labor efficiency. However, the gig economy also raises concerns about income insecurity, social protection and rights, as well as skill development issues. This book examines gig economy trends across 12 APO member countries, examining worker characteristics, regulatory conditions, and productivity implications. It highlights common trends and notes challenges as well as country-specific differences, providing policy recommendations to support sustainable growth, worker welfare, and maximize economic benefits.
