Abstract

The article examines the views and opinions of Zh. Aimautov on the issues of the Kazakh alphabet and orthography. The purpose of the article is to analyse the writer's propositions concerning the sound system of the Kazakh alphabet based on the Arabic script and the peculiarities of their orthographic representation, as well as his proposals aimed at simplifying spelling. Particular attention is paid to Zh. Aimautov's views on the use of the diacritic sign (däiekşi) in the alphabet and on dialectal words. In 1929, Kazakh writing was transferred from the Arabic script to the Latin script. In connection with the transition to the new alphabet, a number of disagreements arose regarding orthography and the alphabet. Various points of view on these issues were published on the pages of periodicals of that time, brought to broad public discussion, and became the subject of numerous debates. Such publications include the articles of A. Baitursynov, M. Dulatov, S. Amanzholov, E. Omarov, T. Shonanov, N. Zalyuly, I. Kaimenuly, A. Mamytuly, Sh. Ualitov, and a number of other works. The theoretical propositions set forth in the articles of the aforementioned Alash figures, as well as general linguistic theories, may be considered as the methodological basis of the present study. Along with the analysis and description of Zh. Aimautov's views on the issues of the Kazakh alphabet and orthography, the article also employs the methods of systematisation, generalisation, and classification of the material under consideration. The scientific significance and value of the results of the present study are determined by the relevance of Zh. Aimautov's propositions on the issues of the alphabet and orthography both for the period of his life and activity and for subsequent stages in the development of Kazakh linguistics. In this regard, the results of the study may be used in theoretical and practical aspects as supplementary material in the study of the writer's linguistic heritage.
