Detection of biomarkers in biofluids using wearable SERS sensors
Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) enables the sensitive, label-free, and multiplexed detection of biomarkers in biofluids. Flexible SERS substrates, in particular, facilitate non-invasive, on-site biofluid measurements. This talk summarizes the application of flexible SERS substrates for the detection of biomarkers in diverse biofluids. Specifically, SERS measurements of sweat and urine have been shown to indicate metabolic activity. Furthermore, measurements of gingival crevicular fluid using periopaper coated with flexible SERS substrates reveal a correlation between the periodontal disease stage and biomarker concentration. Finally, saliva measurements demonstrate the feasibility of on-site biomarker detection using a portable Raman spectrometer, highlighting the practical potential of this technology.
