EXPRESSION OF TEMPORAL LOCALIZATION BY PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES IN THE GENITIVE CASE IN MODERN GREEK AND THEIR TRANSLATION EQUIVALENTS IN SERBIAN
Abstract
This paper explores the temporal prepositional genitive in Modern Greek, which denotes temporal localization, and its Serbian translation equivalents. By identifying and analyzing the syntactic and semantic properties of these constructions, the study conducts a contrastive analysis to examine their rendering in Serbian, highlighting key similarities and differences. The research is based on examples extracted from the online corpus of Modern Greek (http://web-corpora.net/GreekCorpus/ search), which includes texts from newspapers such as Μακεδονία, Το Βήμα, and Ελευθεροτυπία. The findings reveal notable similarities in the expression of temporal localization between the two languages, while differences primarily stem from syntactic and semantic rules requiring minor adjustments, as well as contextual variations affecting structure selection. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of temporal localization in cross-linguistic contexts and provides insights into the interplay of syntax and semantics in Modern Greek and Serbian, shedding light on language-specific patterns and structural differences between the two languages.
