Abstract

The behavior and performance of the X and Gamma-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XGIS) instrument onboard the Transient High Energy Sky and Early Universe Surveyor (THESEUS) mission, currently under ESA assessment within the Cosmic Vision M7 program, have been extensively investigated through detailed simulations carried out with a Geant4-based Monte Carlo framework employing an updated mass model. This work outlines the main contributions to the instrumental background expected in the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) planned for THESEUS, including diffuse photon fields, various cosmic-ray components, and Earth albedo radiation. The simulations have been used to evaluate the XGIS performance in terms of effective area and instrument response. Finally, the modulation of the background conditions along the complete THESEUS orbit is analyzed. This work provides an updated characterization of the XGIS observational performance and the expected in-orbit background environment.

Integration and testing of the background-subtracting gamma-aay spectrometer for the MAMBO CubeSat mission

The origin of the cosmic diffuse gamma-ray (CDG) background in the 0.3 – 10MeV energy range is a mystery that has persisted for 50 years. The best existing measurements have large systematic uncertainties, and the latest theoretical models based on emission from active galactic nuclei and supernovae differ significantl...

In-Flight Self-Calibration of the STIX Grid Transmission

The Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) on board Solar Orbiter provides imaging information on the X-ray sources in solar flares by modulating the emitted radiation with pairs of grids made of stacked tungsten layers. Optical measurements of the grids were taken on the ground and utilized to derive an init...

System analysis for a high-precision high-accuracy astrometric instrument for HWO

This study presents an updated system analysis for an instrument onboard the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), designed for high-precision, high-accuracy differential astrometry, with the primary scientific goal to determine the mass of Earth-like planets around the nearest Sun-like stars. The analysis integrates the...

Radiation exposure in low Earth orbit measured with the RAMIS instrument on the DLR Eu:CROPIS satellite

The radiation environment in space and the related radiation exposure is seen as one of the main health detriments for human missions in and beyond low Earth orbit (LEO). In addition to national space agencies sending astronauts to space, the near future is likely to bring numerous commercial endeavours that will facil...
