Abstract

The Precision Time Protocol has gained significant importance for time synchronisation in high-demand services such as 5G and 6G telecommunications, real-time and low-latency applications, and industrial control. We present a distributed monitoring scheme based on control plane telemetry explorers that extract insightful information from the PTP and physical hardware clock (PHC) stacks of boundary clock (BC) timing nodes. In contrast to conventional network monitoring techniques, our approach provides deep insight into PTPv2 operation at scale while preserving high timing resolution comparable to dedicated hardware timing probes. A One-monthlong excerpt from the acquired telemetry-based data set is publicly available. Lastly, this paper presents two network anomalies captured thanks to the newly designed telemetry-based monitoring scheme.
