Abstract
This systematic literature review examines the usage of the Malay language in digital media and explores current research trends, sociocultural influences, and educational implications within the digital communication environments. The increasing expansion of digital platforms such as social media, online learning applications, and multimedia communication has significantly transformed the way the Malay language is used, represented, and disseminated. However, existing studies remain fragmented across different disciplines, creating a need for a comprehensive synthesis of recent scholarly findings. Therefore, this study aims to systematically review the contemporary research on the Malay language usage in digital media between 2023 and 2025. The review employed the PRISMA protocol to ensure a transparent and systematic selection process. Two major databases, namely Scopus and ERIC, were utilized for data collection, while the advanced search was conducted using the keywords “digital media” and “Malay language.” A total of 22 primary studies were identified and analyzed based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The findings revealed three dominant themes in the literature: (1) Language, Discourse and Digital Communication, which highlights linguistic adaptation and communication patterns in online interactions; (2) Social Media, Identity and Sociocultural Representation, which focuses on identity construction, cultural expression, and community engagement through Malay language use on social networking platforms; and (3) Digital Media, Education and Behavioural Influence, which discusses the role of digital media in language learning, educational practices, and behavioural development among users. Overall, the review demonstrates that digital media has become a significant platform for the evolution, preservation, and transformation of the Malay language. The study contributes to the growing body of literature on digital linguistics and provides useful insights for researchers, educators, and policymakers in strengthening the relevance of the Malay language in the digital era.
The rapid development of digital technology has transformed the practice of Islamic preaching (da'wah), shifting from conventional communication methods toward digital platforms that enable broader and more interactive religious engagement. This study aims to explore the intellectual structure, publication trends, influential contributions, collaboration patterns, and emerging research themes in the field of Digital Da'wah using a bibliometric analysis approach. Data were retrieved from the Scopus database using relevant keywords related to digital da'wah, online preaching, Islamic communication, and digital religion. TikTok has rapidly evolved into a dominant communication platform among teenagers, enabling unique forms of language play, identity display, and social interaction. This systematic literature review compares linguistic trends among Malaysian and American adolescents aged 13–19 on TikTok, focusing on slang and viral expressions, code-mixing and translanguaging practices, identity construction, and language–culture relations. Guided by PRISMA 2020, a comprehensive search was conducted across Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, LLBA and Google Scholar, covering studies published between 2020 and 2025. Twenty-nine peer-reviewed publications met the inclusion criteria. Thematic synthesis reveals that (i) American teenagers drive global slang innovation shaped by pop culture, African American Vernacular English (AAVE), and fandom discourse; (ii) Malaysian teenagers engage in extensive creative code-mixing between English, Malay, and local vernaculars to perform humour, solidarity, and online persona; (iii) TikTok’s multimodal affordances encourage linguistic hybridisation, enabling young users to construct cultural identity and navigate peer norms; and (iv) digital trends increasingly influence offline youth communication in both countries. The review highlights significant gaps in longitudinal data, Southeast Asian representation, AI-mediated captions, and ethical considerations in researching minors on social media. Implications emphasise the need for culturally responsive digital language policies in Malaysian education to recognise youth multimodal repertoires. Future research should include computational linguistic analysis and cross-regional comparison of youth TikTok communication practices.

Speaking is one of the most challenging language skills for English as a foreign language (EFL) learners to master, while advances in digital technology have created new opportunities to address this challenge. This study aimed to identify the types of digital technologies used in English speaking instruction, analyze their effectiveness, and describe the challenges associated with their implementation. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method following the PRISMA 2020 protocol. Searches were conducted in the Google Scholar and ERIC databases, covering articles published between 2021 and 2026. Ten articles were selected for analysis using content analysis. The findings showed that the digital technologies applied were categorized into five groups: mobile-assisted language learning, short-video social media platforms, synchronous computer-mediated communication, artificial intelligence (AI), and immersive technologies. Among the ten reviewed articles, seven reported positive effects on speaking fluency, vocabulary use, self-confidence, and motivation; however, improvements in pronunciation and speaking anxiety were not consistently observed. The main challenges identified included technical issues, the need for user training, limited personalization of technological feedback, and students’ preference for direct interaction. These findings indicate that technology selection should be aligned with specific learning objectives while maintaining the essential role of human interaction in language learning.

This study examines the cultural elements in textbooks from five sets used for teaching Turkish as a foreign language. It identifies the cultural elements included in reading texts, compares their distribution across A1-C1 levels, and evaluates, based on the data, the themes in which cultural transmission is prominent or limited. The study examined 688 texts in 23 textbooks. The study was conducted through a qualitative research approach using document analysis, and the data were analyzed through descriptive analysis. As the data collection tool, the Rubric for Cultural Elements Reflected in Texts, based on the sociocultural knowledge classification in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, was used. The data were evaluated under 7 main categories and 46 subcategories. The study was limited to reading texts; idioms, proverbs, listening texts, and visuals were excluded. The findings show that cultural elements are concentrated under values, beliefs, and attitudes, whereas body language, living conditions, and interpersonal relations are represented more limitedly. Additionally, the category of “other countries, states, and peoples” was examined as a separate dimension of analysis, and it was found that intercultural content was not evenly distributed across the textbook sets. In conclusion, cultural content in textbooks should be organized more evenly and functionally across levels and in a way that supports intercultural awareness. The study offers a comparative perspective on cultural content planning in Turkish teaching sets and aims to contribute to material development for learners of Turkish as a foreign language.
The rapid development of digital technology has significantly influenced the way local cultures are represented, preserved, and transformed in contemporary society. In Indonesia, digital media has created new opportunities for cultural communities to disseminate local traditions, strengthen cultural awareness, and engage younger generations in cultural preservation efforts. However, the increasing integration of digital platforms also introduces challenges related to cultural adaptation, authenticity, and changes in cultural identity. This study aims to analyze the influence of digital media on the reconfiguration of local culture in Indonesia. A quantitative research approach was applied using survey data collected from 200 respondents who actively engage with digital media platforms and have experience accessing local cultural content online. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. The analysis involved validity testing, reliability testing, descriptive statistical analysis, classical assumption testing, and simple linear regression analysis. The results indicate that digital media has a positive and significant influence on local cultural reconfiguration. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R² = 0.468) indicates that digital media utilization explains 46.8% of the variation in local cultural reconfiguration. These findings demonstrate that digital media functions not only as a communication platform but also as an important mechanism for cultural preservation, adaptation, and identity reconstruction. This study contributes to understanding how technological development influences cultural sustainability in Indonesia and highlights the importance of utilizing digital platforms strategically to maintain cultural values while encouraging innovation.
