Abstract

This chapter delves into the transformative synergy between artificial intelligence (AI) and smart contracts, positioning them as the next frontier in managing digital assets and virtual currencies. It introduces the core concepts, illustrating how AI injects adaptability into rigid blockchain-based contracts, enabling real-time adjustments, predictive analytics, and autonomous dispute resolution. From an economic perspective, the integration drives efficiency in decentralized finance (DeFi), with the total value locked surging to $129 billion by mid-2025, thereby democratizing access while posing risks such as market bubbles. Socially, it promises inclusion for underserved populations through microlending and empowers communities via decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), yet raises concerns over biases, job disruptions, and digital divides. Policy analysis examines frameworks such as the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) guidelines, balancing innovation with consumer protection in central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) like the Digital Euro and e-CNY. Business perspectives highlight competitive edges in supply chain optimization and tokenized economies, with practical recommendations for risk mitigation. Key applications explored include dynamic contract optimization using machine learning, AI oracles for trustless data integration, and AI-driven DAOs for governance. Institutional and retail use cases demonstrate AI-audited compliance and robo-advisors for portfolios. Regulatory and ethical challenges, including the legal personhood of AI-augmented DAOs and issues of bias, transparency, and accountability, are critically assessed. Future directions envision convergences with the Internet of Things (IoT) and quantum computing, fostering self-sustaining ecosystems amid risks such as encryption vulnerabilities and opportunities for trillions in value creation. Aimed at business professionals, academics, and regulators, the chapter provides actionable insights to navigate and profit from this evolving landscape, emphasizing ethical and sustainable practices.

The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.
