Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interpretations of Ibn Kathir and M. Quraish Shihab regarding the *tabayyun* (verification) verses in the Qur’an, examine the differences in their approaches to the ethics of information production and validation, and explain the relevance of the *tabayyun* concept to modern society in the digital communication era. The research focuses on Surah Al-Hujurat (6), Surah Al-Isra’ (36), Surah An-Nur (15–16), and Surah Al-Ahzab (70) as the foundation for communication ethics and information validation from a Qur’anic perspective. A qualitative approach utilizing library research methods was employed. Primary data sources were *Tafsir Ibn Kathir* and *Tafsir Al-Misbah*, while secondary data were obtained from relevant books, scholarly journals, undergraduate and graduate theses, and academic documents. Data collection was conducted through documentation and literature review. Data analysis utilized descriptive-analytical methods and a comparative exegesis (*tafsir muqaran*) approach to compare the interpretations of the two exegetes regarding the *tabayyun* verses. Data validity was reinforced through source triangulation and the analysis of relevant literature. The findings indicate that both Ibn Kathir and Quraish Shihab regard *tabayyun* as a crucial principle in information validation and Islamic communication ethics. Ibn Kathir places greater emphasis on the validity of the chain of transmission (*sanad*), the credibility of news sources, and a narrative-based (*riwayat*) approach to safeguarding the veracity of information. In contrast, Quraish Shihab emphasizes contextual aspects, the social responsibility of communication, and the relevance of information ethics to modern life. The concept of *tabayyun* in both commentaries holds significant relevance to digital communication issues such as hoaxes, social polarization, and low media literacy.
