Electroplasticity-Induced Microstructural Evolution and Mechanical Response of AA2024 Aluminum Alloy during Plate Forming
Abstract
This experimental study investigates the influence of electroplasticity on microstructural evolution and mechanical response during AA2024 plate forming processes. Direct current levels of 90 A, 100 A, and 110 A, corresponding to current densities of approximately 1.20, 1.33, and 1.47 A/mm 2 , were applied for 60 s during deformation, were utilized. The microstructure was characterized in accordance with ASTM E3 and ASTM E112 standards. Mechanical properties, including tensile and bending assessments, were evaluated following ASTM E8 and ASTM E290 standards. Microstructural analysis indicated that the application of electric current reduced θ AL-Cu precipitates and altered the microstructure. The highest tensile strength, 243.756 N/mnv 2 , and flexural strength, 1200.742 N/mm 2 , were observed at 90 A. An increase in current resulted in diminished mechanical strengths. These findings confirm that variations in current substantially affect both microstructure and mechanical performance.
