Learning with Cozmo: Embodied-Affective Social Mediation in Child–Robot Programming Education

Abstract

Social robots are increasingly explored in education, yet their pedagogical value remains under-theorized and inconsistently realized in practice. This paper investigates how embodied social robots can support early programming education through the design and deployment of a two-week Cozmo-based curriculum co-developed with teachers and implemented in a real-world learning setting for children aged 7-10. Grounded in embodied cognition, constructionism, and social mediation, we present a mixed-methods study combining qualitative teacher interviews with quantitative engagement and affect measures. Through reflexive thematic analysis, we identify three interrelated mechanisms through which the robot supports learning: embodied feedback, affective engagement, and teacher-mediated social scaffolding. We contribute a conceptual framework of Embodied-Affective Social Mediation, positioning social robots not as standalone teaching tools but as mediating infrastructures that couple physical action, social interaction, and emotional engagement. Our findings show that while embodiment enables immediate cause-effect understanding and affect sustains motivation, the educational value of the system critically depends on teacher facilitation. We also identify key constraints related to technical reliability and scalability. This work provides design implications for integrating social robots into pedagogy and advances a conceptual understanding of how embodiment and affect shape learning in child-robot interaction.

Supporting Intercultural Education with Social Robots: A Longitudinal Analysis of Children Behaviors in Group-Based Interactions

The introduction of social robots in early education contexts faces a range of complex challenges, as robots must adapt to each setting's pedagogical principles, the diverse needs of children, and teacher involvement must be considered. We address these complexities by presenting a long-term, in-the-wild study aimed at...

How teacher support, peer connection, and embodied meaning-making interact in drama-based social-emotional learning in higher education

Drama-based social-emotional learning has gained increasing attention in higher education, yet participation in embodied activities does not in itself ensure sustained engagement or social-emotional development. Less is known about how teacher support, peer interaction, and embodied participation become interconnected...

Leveraging Multimodal Data to Understand Computational Thinking in Young Learners: Augmented Reality and Social Robots

This research examines the computational thinking abilities of young children (2nd-year elementary students) within an embodied learning framework aimed at enhancing STEM education. The study investigates how augmented reality and social robots can support problem-solving in STEM-related tasks. Over four days, students...

Cozmo Robot Land: How Children Co-Create Social Worlds Through Design

Participatory design (PD) with children offers a powerful approach for co-creating technologies that are both engaging and developmentally appropriate. In this study, we present a two-hour PD workshop conducted with children aged 5-11 years to explore how children collaboratively design and imagine social roles for a r...

LEND ME A HAND: EMBODIMENT-BASED LEARNING PRACTICES AND ENVIRONMENTS AS ACTIVE PROCESSES OF INCLUSION

The processes of inclusion across diverse educational contexts and institutional levels highlight the critical role of embodied gestures in shaping both individual presence and the collective capacity to learn within shared environments. Recognizing and interpreting these gestures requires acute sensitivity to their in...

Age-Tailored Social Robot Interventions for Emotion Understanding in Autistic Children

Emotional understanding is a key component of Theory of Mind (ToM), yet many autistic children struggle with recognizing and interpreting emotions. At the same time, they tend to enjoy interacting with robots, which are perceived as predictable and less socially complex. This pilot study investigates the use of age-tai...
